Amarillo soccer fans will soon have the chance to watch professional level soccer in the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum and a new indoor league was announced Wednesday.
Stephanie Tucker, owner of the Amarillo Venom indoor football franchise currently in action, announced the forming of the US Arena Soccer League and her franchise FC Amarillo.
Tucker said the idea has been on the table for the fast-paced league for the five years and “we are so excited to give the city another Family Friendly sporting event. This is a game you have never seen before and we are making up the rules as we speak. That’s a fun part of this.”
Tucker said the ASL will consist of 6-10 teams and the inaugural season will boot off in the spring of 2019 with plans to run from April-July.
However, soccer fans have the opportunity to get a taste of what’s in store with a pair of exhibition games against FC Lubbock. Those two games are set for the Civic Center at 4 p.m. on April 29 and June 3.
Tucker has already named a coach in Chad Webb, the women’s soccer coach at West Texas A&M.
Webb has already been working out 20-25 players the past month and says the commitment and level of play is outstanding.
“We are so excited about this adventure,” Webb said. “I always knew if somebody was willing to try this Amarillo had the talent to put together a good soccer team. What I didn’t was in these players would show the commitment and heart for what we are trying to do.”
